Talk. New media and the decline of conversation

The paper constructs an argument regarding the emergence of conversation as a reconceptualized form of personal communication that is emerging with the aid of new technologies. Contrary to widespread critical observations about the impact of communication technologies on the individual, the author suggests that individuals in search of their own identity have embraced - among other media - the development of cell phones, internet cafes, as well as traditional sites of conversation, to establish themselves and their relations to the world. The result is the survival of conversation in new forms or with new methods as a primary source of defining and recognizing the self in social settings.
